Small ‘Tweeks’- Front Cover

With this cover, I added the word ‘magazine’ below the title to see if it would make the left side look a bit busier. I also added a faded copy of the word ‘New York’ in the banner and it’s vague, but I think it makes a difference.

This is my final front cover with all my improvements.
I changed the photo of Katherine Jenkins as I couldn’t use photos that weren’t my own and I replaced it with a photo of Emma and I made it into my own CD cover. I switched it to the right side because having the album on the left covered Sammy’s face a bit too much and that’s not what I wanted. So I switched it with the barcode and I put in a black banner with a grabbing headline about the New York unveiling of the metropolitan opera. I also changed the font of the title because I think that ‘lucida calligraphy’ is too plain and it doesn’t stand out enough. I kept it for the sub-titles on the front cover but I used ”perpetua titling MT’ which looked a lot more classical to me. I kept the swirls that link with the double page spread and the contents page and I still think that there is something missing from this cover. I think that the left side by the ‘best record of 2009′ looks too empty compared to the right side where all the sub-titles are. But overall, I am happy with this design.

This is my final front cover, double page spread and contents page together.
I can see that the colour scheme is all the same and I like that I have used the same swirly music notes in all three. I think it links well.
Contents Page

This is my final contents page. I chose to remove the contents background and leave it white, because I think it looks more professional. I did all the text on Microsoft Publisher and I did the photos and the background in Photoshop. I filled the empty white space with a competition because I thought it made it look more like a magazine. I also put my name at the bottom where I wrote ‘Photos: Gina Brown’ because every magazine has that. I have the made up website below the photo of Elise as a reference, and I think I have appropriate photographs. The only thing I dislike about the contents page is the colour of the purple banner. I think it should have been a lot darker to match the front cover, but then I’m not sure if the whole magazine would be too evolved around the front cover. I think the colour scheme was used well, and I like it a lot, but I think the purple banner on the contents page should have been darker like the double page spread.

This is the contents page without the final photo of Elise and without the contents page background. I think this looks a bit more professional whereas having the words all over the white background makes it look a bit tacky I think. As it’s supposed to be a classical magazine I think that I’m going to remove the words to keep it a plain white background.

This is my contents page so far, I’ve done all the photos and backgrounds on photoshop and I’ve now started to use Publisher to put in all my writing. I’m not too sure that I’ll keep the contents page background (all the words) because I think it makes the magazine look a bit more common that fancy as it’s supposed to be a classical music magazine. As for the images, I think I’ve chosen pretty suitable photographs. I’ve got Sammy in the corner in her black dress so I think she looks quite classy. I’ve got a photo of Christine looking to the side, and she’s wearing a black outfit but you can’t tell in this image. I like the fact that it’s only her face and the way her face looks matches the writing I want to put about her. I plan to have underneath her name ‘tells us all about her nervous breakdown on stage’. I like the idea of having a classical magaazine but at the same time is kind of gossip about classical stars. The photo of Elise works well I think because she’s wearing a flowery dress and I love the expression that she’s got on her face. I think it kind of looks like she’s at an award ceremony.
) I’ve used the music notes again in this page because it ties in with the front cover, and I’ve kept the colour scheme.

My final double page spread (:
To solve my dilemma of having half of the right side too white, I put the swirly music notes in again at the bottom. I think it’s a nice touch to the final spread and I don’t think it’s too noticeable, which is good otherwise the reader would be too focused on the music notes rather than the text itself. I also lowered the opacity so it doesn’t overpower the writing.

Click to enlarge, I used a black banner to surround the title, and I used a casual font.
The only thing I dislike about this design, is that half of the right page is completley white. So if I’m going to have half of the right side reflected, I think I’d have to have the right side of the right side reflected too.

I chose to keep some of my questions personal and relevant at the same time. I wanted to keep the idea of a serious classical magazine, but at the same time have a bit of a twist to it, and make some answers funny.

I did a photoshoot of my sister with the same background for my double page spread. I did change her hair and makeup, but I didn’t want to use a photo from the same shoot as before. I am most likely to use the first photo because I think it looks classy which is the main idea of the magazine.
